Eleanor of Castile was very upset when an assassination attempt was made on Edward. At Haifa, he was stabbed with a dagger thought to be poisoned and was saved by a surgeon who cut away the poisoned flesh.

King Henry III died. Eleanor’s husband succeeded as King Edward I of England. Robert Burnell was appointed to govern England until Edward and Eleanor returned.

War broke out between Edward and Llewellyn ap Gruffydd when Edward invaded Wales. Llewellyn’s forces had no choice but to retreat to the mountains of Snowdonia. Edward then took the island of Anglesey cutting off Llewellyn’s supply of food and forcing him to submit to Edward.

A daughter, Mary, was born to Eleanor and Edward.

A daughter, Isabella, was born to Eleanor and Edward. She died before the end of the year.

Eleanor of Castile died at the manor of Harby, Nottinghamshire.

Eleanor’s body was transported to Westminster Abbey, London. The journey took 12 days and at each stopping point Edward ordered crosses, known as Eleanor Crosses, to be built. The twelve crosses were built at Lincoln, Grantham, Stamford, Geddington, Hardingstone, Stony Stratford, Woburn, Dunstable, St Albans, Waltham, West Cheap (Cheapside) and Charing.

Eleanor was buried in Westminster Abbey.
