Rod Stewart was born Roderick David to Robert Joseph Stewart and Elise Rebecca nee Gilbart at Highgate, London in the last year of the Second World War. He was the couple’s fifth child – his two elder brothers Don and Bob and two elder sisters Mary and Peggy were born before the war in Scotland. The family owned a newsagent’s and lived above the shop.

Rod began his education at Highgate Primary School.
1955 (October)
Rod failed the eleven plus examination. This was a test for all children to determine whether they attended an academic grammar school or a secondary modern school.
1956 (September)
Rod attended William Grimshaw Secondary Modern School in Muswell Hill, London. Although he was not academic, Stewart was excellent at football. He was enjoyed model railways.

Stewart’s father bought him a guitar.

Stewart and a group of school friends formed a skiffle group called Kool Kats.

Rod went for trials at Brentford FC. Although some sources state that he was taken on as an apprentice but left soon afterwards, more recent biographies claim he was never taken on by the club.

Having left school, Stewart worked at a variety of jobs including: delivering newspapers for his father, digging graves at Highgate Cemetery, building fences, silk screen printing and working in a funeral parlour.
